Bevin Names CHFS Secretary

Bevin Named Vickie Yates Brown Glisson as Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Glisson is President and CEO of Nucleus, an economic development arm of the University of Louisville.  Since she started in that role in 2008, she has advised the University of Louisville in the areas of health, life sciences and research.  She also is a member of the Health Enterprise Practice Group at Frost Brown Todd LLC where she concentrates her practice in health care, health insurance law, government affairs, informatics and mediation.  She sits on the editorial board of the BNA Health Law Reporter and is certified as a mediator.  She is also the past Chair of the Health Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) and appointed by the President of the ABA to serve as the Health Law Section representative to the ABA Standing Committee on Government Affairs and as a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Medical Professional Liability.

This is a key appointment for Gov.-elect  Bevin, who pledged during the campaign do shut down Kynect, Kentucky’s health care exchange under Obamacare, and eliminating the state’s Medicaid expansion for recipients up to 138 percent of poverty.

“The appointment of the Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services is one of the most critical decisions I will make as Governor. Kentucky is consistently ranked as one of the least healthy states in the country,” Bevin said. “We have 1 in 4 of our citizens enrolled in Medicaid and the financial costs to the Commonwealth are growing exponentially. We must be innovative in our efforts to improve health outcomes for Kentuckians, but do so in a prudent and sustainable manner. I am highly confident that Vickie is the right person to lead this effort.”

Glisson has served on the Advisory Council for the Human Genome Project and National Institute of Diabetes, Digestion and Kidney Disease as part of the National Institutes of Health. She has delivered numerous national and international presentations and co-authored a number of publications on health care law and government regulation.  She was selected as the 2013 Woman of Influence by Louisville Business First newspaper and was a Martha Layne Collins Leadership Award winner in 2013.  She was also recently awarded the Ernst & Young 2013 Supporter of Entrepreneurship for South Central Ohio and Kentucky, was a finalist for Business First’s 2013 Business Leader of the Year Award, awarded the Business First Partner in Healthcare Award on numerous occasions and received the Greater Louisville Inc. 2013 Silver Fleur de Lis Award for fostering technology research and innovation.

Glisson, a native of Spencer County, Kentucky, resides in Louisville with her husband, Col. Shawn D. Glisson, M.D. (Ret. USA), an oncologist and hematologist with Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Kentucky.
